Tablets – aIRpLaY https://www.airplay.io Your Tech Source Sun, 11 Mar 2012 13:39:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.1 https://www.airplay.io/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/cropped-YouTube_Logo-1-1-32x32.png Tablets – aIRpLaY https://www.airplay.io 32 32 Should you get an iPad? Or any tablet at all? https://www.airplay.io/should-you-get-ipad-or-any-tablet-a/ https://www.airplay.io/should-you-get-ipad-or-any-tablet-a/#comments Sun, 11 Mar 2012 13:39:00 +0000 http://airplay.io/2012/03/11/should-you-get-ipad-or-any-tablet-a/

So the iPad sold
more than any computer at the end of last year
and with the release of the
new iPad its Looking like its going to be the same story all over again. Now
you’re wondering ‘should I get one? Or should I go for the galaxy tab instead?
But I also like the Asus transformer! This is a dilemma.’

Calm down before you hurt yourself. It is not just about
getting a tablet. The question is do you need one? To determine if you need a
tablet in your life, there’s a couple of questions you need to ask yourself:
1. Can I afford it?
Tablets are not the most affordable computers in the market.
Their prices are deceptively comparable to that of netbooks and some really
decent notebooks. Be ye not deceived! If you look at what can be achieved with
a notebook and you compare it to that of a tablet, you’ll realize that the
tablet falls short. But of course you can do more with a tablet when you
accessorize. And that will run you into spending more than you need to buy an
actual computer that will be more powerful and serve you for years.
2. Why am I getting a
tablet?
Since the earliest computers, the major tasks associated
with them have been work and play. If you are getting a tablet because
you want to be ‘mobile’ and be able to work on the go, I’m sorry for you.
Tablets are naturally full touch screen devices and if you decide to type an
entire article on one (like I’m doing right now), you’ll see how uncomfortable
and non-ergonomic it is. If you really have to work on the go, get a netbook or
a really light notebook.
If you are getting it for play, you may be able to get away
with this. Largely because of the over half a million apps on the AppStore,
more than one fifth of that are games. But you should also think twice
considering that the price of a tablet can get you a gaming console that can doubleas a top of the line blu-ray player.
But! One last but! If you’re getting as a gift, that’s just
awesome.
Hope this article has helped you to be more decisive on
whether or not you need a tablet. Do you own a tablet that you love and cherish
and use often? Let us know what you do on it; please leave a comment down
below.

App of the Month–Flipboard https://www.airplay.io/app-of-monthflipboard/ Mon, 29 Aug 2011 23:44:00 +0000 http://airplay.io/2011/08/29/app-of-monthflipboard/ IMG_0047 Flipboard is referred to as the world’s first social magazine. The fact that it was Apple’s iPad app of the year for 2010 is enough to let you have an idea of how really good this app is. First thing you notice after launching the app is the beautiful presentation of news in a slideshow. Sliding you finger across the screen opens your ‘favorites’ screen where you have your news sources and room to add more sources. There’s an option to add Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr and other feeds to the favorites screen. Opening pages may not appear as slick as in the Classics app or iBooks but with the presentation here, this might not be necessary. IMG_0003IMG_0005IMG_0006IMG_0016 On the social side, the app allows you to tweet, update your Facebook status and access a whole lot of other social services. Flickr looks beautiful as it also gives you room to comment on photos. As for twitter, there is no function to view or create Direct Messages but after I was able to get in touch with John Virtes, the community manager for Flipboard, he was kind enough to let me know that they might be adding a Direct Message functionality soon.  Flipboard is looking to expand very soon with the addition of TV shows. This is not something I’m really looking forward to because there will definitely be restrictions as to where you can watch the shows from and besides not everyone has the bandwith to stream TV shows…in HD…from a server in North America! In all, it’s a really good app for news consumption and for some really relaxing social experience. They are so many other really cool features that you’ll have to use the app yourself to find out. And for the price of zero bucks, I don’t see you getting broke for downloading this app. NB: It is currently only available on the iPad but an iPhone release, they say, will be coming soon. No word about Android or Windows Phone yet. IMG_0018IMG_0019IMG_0048IMG_0049IMG_0050IMG_0051IMG_0052IMG_0053

Information Overload! https://www.airplay.io/information-overload/ Mon, 01 Feb 2010 21:36:00 +0000 http://airplay.io/2010/02/01/information-overload/ This post here was particularly inspired by my brother http://www.dajico.com. We had a discussion about how new products come out almost every time in different categories ranging from PCs to E-readers, to Smartphones, digital cameras, etc and consumers are always ‘forced’ to make a choice. The illustration in this article was done by a very good and creative friend of mine: Dapọ Ọlaọpa; (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dpencilpusher)
(http://twitter.com/dpencilpusher) I assume a lot of people have a few bucks to spare that’s why they can afford to buy any little piece of gizmo they see on TV during a commercial break or a flash ad on a webpage while checking e-mail. Truth is, in the world of technology, everything moves fast. Innovation is like a whirlwind. Today the Palm Pre comes out and tomorrow, the Nexus One kicks in. Embedded systems improve at a rapid pace like clockwork. And if you are by any chance an enthusiast or gadget freak like me, you are tempted to buy every! But really, do you need every? If you don’t know what you want in your next mobile device, you just might end up buying a variety and then junking them before the month runs out. Many of these devices do pretty much the same thing but in different ways. The iPhone is a really cool iPod that can make calls, the Blackberry is a Smartphone that makes communication easy and also makes everybody ask you the winning question in the question of the year award 2009: “What’s your BB-Pin?”. Information Overload At the end of the day, you find out you have a host of gadgets (devices) and you don’t know which one to take out with you exactly. You’re seated checking e-mail on your netbook, looking up YouTube on your personal computer, receiving a call on your iPhone and reading a book on your nook [or Kindle ]. Even though you can do pretty much all these things on one device e.g. the iPhone, people will still go all the way out to buy multiple devices and get confused soon enough. And thanks to the introduction of the iPad, there’s a lot of spending anticipated in April – during its release – and thereafter. So when selecting mobile devices, it is advisable to look out for what suits your current lifestyle the most. In the near future, there could be an article on how to select the right Smartphone/mobile device. In the mean time, you can keep enjoying what you have already. 🙂 Thanks for reading 🙂
