How do you create an app of one of your most important services for your rival, making the app good enough to leave all the competition in the dust and at the same time not good enough to veer them away from your platform completely? This is what Google has to do with its upcoming Maps app for iOS.

Ever since the launch of iOS6, besides the regular bugs here and there, the greatest talking point has been the lacklustre Maps application. It has been nicer to some people in more popular cities like Newyork and London but if you live in Nigeria and you relied heavily on Google Maps on iOS for knowing your way around, now you’re screwed.

Google now has the challenge of remedying Apple’s Maps debacle by releasing its own app for its customers. This app has to be better than the alternatives offered in the AppStore while at the same time not better than or even as good as Google Maps on Android.

Without a doubt, Google has the best Maps service in the world. If you’re not convinced, Google it. *straight face*. And in the past year the Android platform has seen a decent growth over iOS in the Smartphone market and Google looks to keep the momentum going. Slipping up by blessing Apple with the best Maps service on one of the best mobile Operating Systems is not an option.

iTweet. Do you? https://www.airplay.io/itweet-do-you/ https://www.airplay.io/itweet-do-you/#comments Sat, 31 Oct 2009 12:48:00 +0000 http://airplay.io/2009/10/31/itweet-do-you/
It is easy to say because you have a Facebook account, Yahoo! account, a MySpace page, the last thing you need right now is Twitter; you don’t want an extra account with another password – not again! Well, sorry to burst your bubble but as far as information is concerned, Twitter is possibly the most useful social networking tool out there.
As much as Facebook allows you to poke whoever you want, and Yahoo! lets you chat whenever you like with your Yahoo! buddies, twitter is your best bet for information on a specific topic or a field you’re interested in.
Twitter allows you enter only 140 characters per post. Your post is referred to as a tweet. People following you can see your tweets the same way you see those of those you follow.
Even thought the most basic concept behind twitter is “what are you doing”, it goes way beyond that! Following CNN for example doesn’t necessarily tell you what CNN is doing. What you see instead is a news update from CNN. This is when twitter gets informative.

Interact with twitter.
Twitter brings you closer to people that have similar interests as you. If for example, you are into photography and you need some questions answered about photography, all you have to do is follow someone in photography yourself and ask them questions.
Here are some basic tips on interacting with twitter:
@Mentions: inserting an ‘@’ in front of someone’s twitter username e.g. @CNN notifies them that you have mentioned them in a tweet. You can use this to let your friends know about your new tweet or someone else’s tweet.
Direct Messages: inserting a ‘D’ in front of the username instead, lets you send a direct message to them. This way, the tweet is not visible to anybody else but the person the direct message was sent to.
Retweets: a retweet is simply you re-tweeting what someone else already tweeted. This usually happens if you have friends or family members that can benefit from the information and you are unsure if they are following the person who tweeted. An ‘RT’ in front of the twitter username does the trick.
Hash-tags: these tags only allow you to include whatever you’re talking about in the trending topics. These topics allow users find information about a topic easily by using the twitter search engine. All you have to do is place a ‘#’ in front of the topic e.g. #Windows 7

Now that you know the basics of twitter, it shouldn’t be too difficult for you to start tweeting. While you’re at it, follow me: @aIRplaYtv

Please do realize that comments are absolutely welcome. You can add whatever you think is missing that I left out and you can also criticize twitter – if you can. 🙂

Trending Topics https://www.airplay.io/trending-topics/ https://www.airplay.io/trending-topics/#comments Sat, 24 Oct 2009 21:44:00 +0000 http://airplay.io/2009/10/24/trending-topics/ I have been away from blogging for quite some time now. Partly because of laziness and on the other hand, occupation.
I will like to say though that I’ll try to keep this blog updated as much as I can.
A lot of new things have come up in the world of tech as usual; I’m about to list out some of my favorite and those I’m looking forward to:

Windows 7: the 7th iteration of the Microsoft OS is supposed to be what will make us want to move from XP and junk our Vista. Light and beautiful, packed with functionality. Most of the same people who dissed Vista a couple of years ago, are the same ones praising 7 now. I don’t know about you, but I don’t see 7 disappointing me any time soon.

Fifa10: I am a gamer, even though I haven’t taken my gaming seriously in the past few years, I am willing to do so now 🙂 Fifa10 is by far one of the most authentic feels one can get as far as soccer or even sport simulations go!
Every single detail is taken into great consideration. You go EA Sports!

Ubuntu 9.10: From Jaunty Jackalope to Karmic Koala. I have been using this amazing Linux distro for about two years now and I think I’ll be on it for a long time. My Ubuntu laptop has stopped working and I’m trying to fix it ASAP. If I can’t, I’ll look forward to getting maybe a netbook or some dedicated machine for this new release. Awesome new features like Ubuntu One make this new release another great step in the right direction.

My laptop: Recently, I acquired a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965. As far as Toshibas go, this is a motherload. She’s not even smiling! A 500GB HDD with 4GB of RAM and a Dual Core Intel processor, a DVD-RAM slot loading drive, 🙂 and 512MB of dedicated ATI graphics (Mobility Radeon HD 4570). iLike! 🙂 PS: Don’t try looking for it on the internet; you may not find it 🙂
